Looking for hints as a Solo Roan in 3DIE6?

One of my goals with 3DIE6 was to make a game that was also fun to play without a Tunnel Master or as a solo adventurer. There are a couple of ways one can go about doing this but the most important part of playing solo/TM-Free is to embrace the fact that you are both the player and the storyteller. The game will be much more enjoyable if you create and tell the story to yourself as you go along. Rather than rolling the stats for a chamber and just diving into whatever challenge it presents, reveal the story of how your Roan reaches the chamber, what they see and what choices are presented. Keeping this in mind will help the tools for solo play work more effectively.

Many of the rules for standard play 3DIE6 also apply to the Solo version of play, but here are a few hints and tips for venturing alone into the Shimmer.

Solo Rules:

• The simplest style of solo play for 3DIE6 is to pick a few thematic things - an adventure spore or a type of creature or treasure you are hunting, then roll for random encounters and locations as you go.

• All creatures have a set of reactions that tell you how they act when encountered and help tell the story of the combat. These are triggered by the Silver/Effect Die. You should also consider rolling for this upon encountering a creature. It will give you an idea of what their disposition is before swords are ever drawn. Some of their reactions can be interpreted as non-threatening.

• Also feel free to choose a reaction like RAGE and decide that upon initial encounters, RAGE instead represents indifference or friendly for certain creatures. Although the Roan have their share of run-ins with the other creatures of the Shimmer and it’s a deadly place to survive, most other creatures have some level of language and civilization.

• Because you are going at it solo, you may decide to roll for two loot results after defeating a creature or roll once on their loot table and once on a random loot table from the back. Opportunities for recovery, healing and weapon upkeep becomes less frequent and more dangerous when you are alone.

• For an easier adventure you can also modify Exo-Glue to fully heal a damaged stat rather than the fix being temporary.

• I don’t recommend playing multiple Roans solo. Juggling many groups of mind-sets can get overwhelming quickly.

• I also tend to ignore the terrain and encumberance rules when playing solo but I do like to allow the terrain I’m traveling through influence the storytelling.

• Keep a journal of your adventure, noting encounters, environment and obstacles you face. Often recording your solo sessions will aid in the storytelling and help create a more fleshed out world and experience.

• The most important thing to consider with playing 3DIE6 solo is to have fun. If rules need to be modified or creatures changed so that you are having a good time, I encourage that. TM-free play is also great as a group storytelling exercise, generating rooms in the Shimmer and working together to plot the adventure.
